Assure, Ensure, and Insure

To assure is to remove doubt, to tell someone everything’s OK, and you can also tell someone to rest assured when you know everything’s under control:

  • I assure you, I am not put together at all. Nor am I broken. I am recovering – finding the beautiful in the ugly and stitching it into my life.

To ensure means to make certain a thing will (or won’t happen):

  • Good wishes alone will not ensure peace.

To insure is to arrange for financial compensation against the loss of something or against someone getting hurt or dying. You might insure your health, your Cadillac, your beachside condo, or your stocks and bonds:

  • We insured our house against fire and flood damage.

I assure you that I can ensure that you are in fact insured.
